Rebels: DRC killing civilians

2009-09-09 22:25
Nairobi - Rwandan Hutu rebels on Wednesday accused the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwandan government forces of killing more than 70 Rwandan refugees and Congolese civilians over the last two months.
The Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) in the east of the DRC said civilians were "brutally murdered" by the two armies between July 4 and August 25.
In a statement, the FDLR rebels said they "condemn the ongoing serious crimes against the Congolese people and against the Rwandan Hutu refugees... in the eastern DRC and call for an independent international investigation".
The group did not say how many Congolese civilians were killed.
Rwandan forces joined Congolese troops in a rare joint raid against the FDLR in January in eastern DRC and officially pulled out on February 26 after what they deemed a successful operation against the rebels.
